In 1991 when I was a visiting professor in the United States, I met a technician in a laboratory who operated a cell analyzer. He told me that he had colon cancer with liver metastasis. A few months ago, he had severe pain around the liver region. Doctors gave him intravenous tube and subcutaneous pump implantation with regular injection of analgesics. Presently he did not have any pain and could do his job normally. He told me that he was the only person who could complete the study he was doing now. He had to live for at least another year to complete it. He said solemnly, “I have reached an agreement with death that as long as the study is not done, I will not report to him!” After saying that he shrugged, winked and smiled sweetly as if he were a very healthy person without any sickness.
The Guinness Book of Records has a world record set by Johnson, an electrician from South Dakota who had undergone 889 operations. Thirty years ago, he had skin cancer and followed by metastases of bone and internal organs. He received one operation after another on his face, neck, arms, back, brain and gall bladder which left him with many traces of scalpel. He was a long term patient of Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Doctors have hoped to use his body for research purposes but it is not materialized yet because Johnson is still alive and creating new world records. For these thirty plus years, Johnson faced his disease boldly and does not let the shadow of death hover him. His strong will to live is a factor contributing to his success in his fight against cancer.
On 6th May 2010, CCTV in its program “Encyclopedia Quest” broadcasted a program called “Miniature Art and Cancer”. It was about a miniature artist by the name of Zhang Yi who had colon cancer with liver metastasis. He insisted in continuing with the miniature art. Without using any magnifying tool, he completed carving the whole literary masterpiece, the “Dream of the Red Mansion” on 120 pieces of stone within three years. He also carved another four Chinese literatures on 368 pieces of stone of one finger length and half a finger width. In the creative process, his pain disappeared spontaneously, his tumor markers dropped to normal. So far he has been living healthily for 10 years.
For sick people, particularly those suffering from the so-called “incurable” diseases, emotions such as disphoria, agitation, anxiety and anger will always happen. However, this does not mean that they do not want to survive.
