On 7th November 2004 in the afternoon, I received a phone call from the producer of the CCTV programme “Public Actions”. He told me that there was a couple in Daqing who needed help very urgently. The husband called Yao Wenliang was a blind person and his wife, Qi Haina was suffering from cancer and her condition was very severe. The producer remembered me because he had read in newspapers how our hospital had helped the boy called Ming Tsai who had a neck tumor. He would like to know if we could help this couple in Daqing. He gave me Yao’s house telephone number.
That night I called Yao at his house. Unexpectedly, after knowing that the call was from a hospital in Guangzhou, the person at the other end of the phone said rudely, “Yet another liar!” and put down the phone. I understand patients’ psychology. I called again and introduced myself as the president of our hospital, a professor and that I had been requested to lend a helping hand to his family. The person at the other end told me that he was Yao and his wife was suffering from cancer and they had come to the end of the road. “If you truly want to help me, come to Daqing!” with this he hung up the phone.
