On the 14th of July 2011, an auspiciously good day, I was reading documents in the office. My secretary Ms. Lu came in and pointing at the door said, “President, there will be a pleasant surprise soon!” “Who is it?” I asked, seeing then Liangliang appear in front of me. I sprinted to him and grabbed his hands saying, “Liangliang, is it really you?” The accompanied head nurse told me he had walked around the ward and insisted walking upstairs by himself to visit me. I took his hands and looked him up and down, as if meeting for the first time. The head nurse told me that Liangliang’s blood sugar had stayed within the normal range and it did not require him to receive a continuous infusion of glucose. I burst into tears of joys, my throat tightening so that I could not utter a word.
Love is great, with infinite power. Without a Malaysian caring lady who always cared for Liangliang, without doctors’ painstaking treatments and nurses’ meticulous care day and night, without love from all parties, how could this miracle of life happen to Liangliang!
I suddenly felt infinitely pleased, I felt an invisible hand that perhaps was God's constantly giving me and my hospital a big favor. In 2006, two Malaysians with ‘Elephant Faces’, Hong Xiuhui and Chen Jiaxin came to our hospital. In 2007, a further patient with a more severe ‘Elephant Face’ from Hunan province, Mr. Huang Chuncai came. In 2009, ovarian cancer patient Peng Ximei who had roamed for two years came. In 2010, Malaysian musician Chen Weitian who had pancreatic cancer came to my hospital for treatment. All of them regained a new life in our hospital, letting me and my hospital bathe in the baptism of love.
This year, Liangliang brought us joy and happiness! But maybe you cannot image how many difficulties, twists and turns, mental struggles we have experienced this year.
More than one year ago, during May 2010 in Kuala Lumpur I met Liangliang for the first time in the auditorium of the largest Chinese newspaper, the ‘Sin Chew Daily’. It was the second day that I was invited to Malaysia to give a lecture on “Do not let cancer treatment become a second damage.” The Sin Chew Daily invited us to give free medical consultations for its readers. I saw three patients. The second one was an advanced tongue cancer patient who lost contact afterwards, the third one was the aforementioned pancreatic cancer patient Chen Weitian; the first one was a young man of twenty-two, named Huang Weiming. He was tall, fat, with unsteady gait and dull looking. He was accompanied by his mother and girlfriend to our hospital. There was another friend Ms. Du who accompanied them. I read his CT and found that there were pancreatic lesions between 2-5 cm in size. A blood test showed his blood glucose was 40-55 mg / liter. With regard to his medical history, I found out that the patient had a surprisingly good appetite, he needed to eat frequently, and otherwise he would fall into a coma. Further enquiry into his medical history, revealed that his mother had a lump on the upper abdomen for seven or eight years. A doctor told both of them that they could not be treated, which scared them to death. They were ready to give up and accept their fate. He and his mother were diagnosed with familial endocrine tumor with multiple endocrine glands had neoplastic lesions. His tumor was functional and his low blood sugar was due to a massive release of insulin induced by the pancreatic tumors. 70% of these tumors were benign, which can be cured by surgery; 10% of these tumors are malignant, but early treatment would also have benefits. I hoped he and his mother could come to our hospital for further treatment. Sometime after I returned to the hospital, I always thought of Liangliang. Then I received an email from Ms. Du Youqun that she was anxious for Liangliang’s treatment.
Dear Professor Xu,
Thank you for diagnosing Huang Weiming (Liangliang). He will have recheck-ups at the local government hospital, I will meet them and ask them to face up to the disease and receive treatments expeditiously. One who is involved in the matter cannot see so clearly as one who is not himself involved. And hearsay around them made them hesitant. I was worried about my friend’s condition! Thank you! Sincerely yours,
Du Youqun

Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! I am sorry to disturb you. I would like to arrange my friend's son, Mr. Huang Weiming to go to Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital for treatment instantly. Currently his condition is not good. Now it is not pancreatic tumor but tumors in the heart with spine metastasis that threaten his life. They are very helpless. I really do not want such a good young life to leave us! I am helpless, sad and can’t sleep. I do hope that you could reply to me as soon as possible and show me how to help them get the right treatment. Thank you! Best regards and take care,
Du Youqun

My reply urged them towards Liangliang undergoing surgery to remove the tumors as soon as possible, or at least have minimally invasive cytoreductive treatments because the tumors released massive amounts of insulin and other hormones that could threaten life. They can receive treatments in my hospital or a local hospital. However since then, there was no news from them. I inquired about them from Malaysian patients, who told me that Liangliang was looking for an herbal remedy.
Hearing this news, I felt helpless and certain it would ruin his life. In fact, not only Liangliang and his relatives make such absurd choices. Even the world’s most intelligent men make ignorant and immature choices when facing illness. The CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, after his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer (the same disease as Liangliang) had made an absurd choice by placing blind faith in ‘dietotherapy’ and he delayed his treatment by nine months. He missed the most optimal treatment time so he was forced to undergo surgery. But by that time the tumor had already spread to other body parts.
In March 2011, at the outpatient hall of our hospital, someone suddenly came to me with my book “Nothing But The Truth” in his hand, he turned to page 190 and said, “Professor Xu, the pancreatic cancer youth you saw in Kuala Lumpur last year is now critically ill.” He added, “He did not listen to you and is now facing this fate”.
In April 2011, Ms. Du Youqun sent an e-mail to me and would like to arrange Liangliang to receive treatments in our hospital. She told me that doctors in Malaysian National University Hospital (NUH) informed families that there was a 7.5 cm malignant tumor between his chest, heart and lung that had spread to the spine, which was classified as stage 4. I immediately replied to the email that he should improve the condition at a local hospital first to ensure a safe plane travel and avoid having unexpected accidents. A few days later, Ms. Du Youqun sent me an email that after several thousand milliliters of pleural effusion was drained, his respiratory condition had improved and he could come to our hospital. She added that everyday Liangliang noisily urged his family to send him to our hospital even though he may die here.
On June 8th, accompanied by his mother and brother, Liangliang arrived at our hospital. He was carried off the aircraft by the airport service personnel. The ambulance of our hospital drove him at top speed to the ward. At that time Liangliang was in a semi-conscious state, blood glucose was only 1.4 mmol / L, which was 80% lower than the normal minimum value. Glucose is a vital nutrient of the human body. Without glucose, energy cannot be produced, which will first damage the brain seriously. He was short of breath and his heart rate was 140 BPM, oxygen saturation below 90, reaching the danger boundary. His CT slides showed that Liangliang’s tumor had advanced to the lung, pleural cavity, pericardium, mediastinum, bone, adrenal gland and liver.
To differentiate between endocrine tumors being malignant or benign is mainly based on clinical course. If there is tumor metastasis, the tumor is certainly malignant. Liangliang had pleural and pericardial metastases, the lesion can be confirmed as malignant; he had pancreatic cancer as well as parathyroid and adrenal lesions with bone, lung and thymus metastases, so the correct diagnosis was type I multiple endocrine neoplasia (malignant).
At the same time we found that his mother had similar lesions as Liangliang. Huge lumps were found on the upper abdomen and left chest, which were estimated to be the same type as Liangliang.
Liangliang’s illness is very rare because it is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder, which generally occurs in the 11th chromosome MEN-in genetic mutation. Surgical excision is the most effective therapeutic method. For the case of Liangliang’s mother, surgical excision and cryosurgery may be effective.
However, Liangliang’s tumor could not be surgically removed. According to common practice, chemotherapy is the only method that could be used. Medical literature reveals that combination application of Streptozotocin and Epirubicin has a 40-50% response rate, and its efficacy can be maintained for up to one year. But at that time the key drug Streptozotocin was in short supply in China. We asked for help from many famous hospitals in Shanghai and Beijing, but failed. We asked for advisory opinions from Japanese and European doctors, they replied that, “It was rare, so they did not have any experience.” Again I sought help from MD Anderson Cancer Center that is ranked as the top cancer research facility in the United States, they responded that chemotherapy would be an option, but its effect is difficult to guarantee…Furthermore, Streptozotocin needs to be kept at a low temperature, which would be difficult to be transported into China.
We considered that since the current methods were all ineffective, why not apply some special treatments? Therefore we used vascular intervention, tumor embolization, and then percutaneous cryosurgery by the guidance of CT freezing and removing the chest and pancreatic tumors little by little.
A miracle finally happened. Liangliang’s condition improved day by day. So far, his blood glucose returned to a normal level and his insulin level reduced to half of that before treatment. Firstly he was seated on bed, and then walked around assisted by his brother, finally he walked alone. He always smiled and shared the good news with anyone that he met.
I shared the good news with my friend who works at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in the United States, he said, “This simply cannot be imagined.” My colleagues and I were very happy.
When I calmed down, I thought we cannot entirely attribute Liangliang’s miracle to our technology. If there was no Ms. Du Youqun from Malaysia, without her love and dozens of emails, Liangliang could not recover in such a short time and the miracle would not have happened. Here are some emails we exchanged with Ms. Du Because I thought she was male, I called her “Mr. Du” in the beginning.
Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! Thank you for taking your time to reply to my email. Currently Malaysian doctors in NUH informed families that there was a 7.5 cm malignant tumor between his chest, heart and lung that had spread to the spine, which was the stage 4.
Weiming’s test report signed by Sucha Wong has been carried to your respected hospital by one Malaysian patient’s family, the patient’s name is Huang Shenghe who suffered from esophageal cancer and has been treated in Guangzhou Fuda Hospital.
Professor Xu, is it possible to arrange Weiming to receive further treatment in Fuda Hospital? I do hope you can help him. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you so much.
Sincerely yours,
Du Youqun
April 24th, 2011 9:10 a.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
Well, we will arrange that as soon as possible. But now he has difficulties in mobility, so he needs a wheelchair. What’s more he vomits a lot. What should a patient pay special attention to when taking a plane? Do we choose Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport as our destination? How do we arrange everything? Please advise, thank you!
Most Sincerely,
Du Youqun
April 24th, 2011 11:33 a.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! How is everything going? I am sorry to disturb you again, but I am so eager to safely send the patient to Fuda Cancer Hospital for further treatment. So far the patient's family has about RM 50,000 in cash, which I think is insufficient to cover all the treatment expenses. Friends are proposing to raise funds through the newspaper. The newspaper is asking if the hospital could give an estimated medical cost. Could your respected hospital make an official letter to estimate medical costs so that we can raise enough funds in advance?
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Du Youqun
May 18th, 2010 3:38 p.m.
Mr. Du,
I do admire you a lot for your efforts to help the poor patient, this has moved me. Certainly we will do our best to help him! A year ago, when I saw this patient, I was confident that I could help him. But now his illness has advanced, I am not so sure whether I can improve his condition or not. But I think symptomatic treatments may be able to improve his conditions, after that we will consider further treatments. With regard to the medical costs, I think, “Many hands make light work.” We will also give him a discount. So far we still don't have a clear idea about which kinds of treatments we can do to ease his condition, it is difficult to estimate the costs. You could prepare RM 60,000-80,000 in the beginning. Please contact with my secretary Dr.
Lu.

May 20th, 2011 3:45 p.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! Thank you for taking your time from your full schedule to reply me. Liangliang grew up together with my child. My child is studying in Taiwan. When he returned to visited sick Liangliang, he could not help crying! We are so sad because we cannot bear such a promising youth to leave us, all our friends here feel the same …! We all would like to send him to Fuda Cancer Treatment for further treatment, which is also the deepest wish of the patient lying on the bed. It is difficult for doctors here to further handle the case because the patient is unwilling to receive any treatments in the local hospital. But the patient has a strong will to live on, so all my friends will do our best to help him. Professor Xu, I do appreciate your kindness and care for your patients, and the team led by you. Thank you!
Sincerely yours,
Du Youqun

Dear Mr. Du,
This afternoon I was pleased and comforted to hear that Mr. Chen Weitian (pancreatic cancer patient) is in a good condition and made an excellent performance in Ipoh city yesterday, shocking the audiences. A year ago, Liangiang and he came to me together. Now I am quite worried whether or not we can help him. I do hope that God gives us an opportunity.
Thank you for your trust.

May 20th, 2011 5:07 p.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
It is reported that Mr. Chen Weitian had success in fighting cancer, which is further evidence of the effective cancer treatment in your respected hospital. Now the patient’s cardio-pulmonary function is poor, the pleural effusion drained has relieved his condition somewhat. An oncologist in this Hospital has asked for a leave for personal affairs (I heard this from another doctor), he did not discuss the therapeutic schedules with families. I would like to ask you if the pleural effusion has been drained, is he suitable to fly? If not, the doctor here recommended undergoing radiotherapy for the patient, should we take the advice or seek other options? We will appreciate it if you could show us the way! Thank you!
Sincerely yours,
Du Youqun
May 21st, 2011 11:06 a.m.
Dear Mr. Du,
If the patient’s cardiopulmonary dysfunction is caused by pleural effusion, the condition will be improved after the pleural effusion is drained. But if the pleural effusion is caused by lung metastasis or pneumonia, it will be very troublesome for him to take a plane. This mainly depends on the patient’s lung function.
Sincerely yours,
Kecheng
May 21st, 2011 11:06:42 a.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! I visited the patient today and his condition is better than before. 2000 ml of pleural effusion has been drained. If you agree to our proposal, the patient will fly to Guangzhou to seek further treatments in your respected hospital immediately, which is the only hope left for the patient and his family. Thank you!
Truly yours,
Du Youqun
May 21st , 2011 11:47 a.m.
Dear Mr. Du,
As I expected, after pleural effusion is drained, his general condition would improve. Since pleural effusion contains large amounts of protein, it is quite essential to supplement albumin via intravenous infusion as soon as possible, while patient can orally take protein powder (preferably Amway, U.S. Brand). It is not necessarily to take special dietary supplements (expensive but noneffective). Take fruits and vegetables orally. You're amazing, you have touched me deeply. Thank you. I will ask Ms. Esther Law from Malaysia to assist you. She is a very caring lady.
Kecheng,
May 23rd, 2011 1:52 p.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! Please forgive me that I've failed to keep contact with you because my computer broke down. The doctor has said that the tube used for pleural effusion draining can be removed and the patient has been discharged from hospital today. The doctor also suggested that the patient needs further treatments as soon as possible if going abroad. This young patient is eager to look for further treatments. He said he would go abroad by wheelchair, but when he returns home, he must walk out of the airport! If everything goes well, we will book tickets tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. We are really sorry to make this hasty decision because this young patient is in his best condition. Professor Xu, please advise me how to contact Esther Law? I work in Malaysian Commercial Press office, I will spend much time preparing a large-scale book fair, so I am afraid that I cannot promptly reply to emails. I do hope we can keep in touch (H / P: 012- 2635580). Thank you!
Respectfully yours,
Du Youqun

Dear Mr. Du,
I really appreciate your love and care. I have contacted Esther, we will also extend our care and love. Her phone number is 128 877 278. Now she is in Taiwan. Please let us know if the schedule is decided, so that we can arrange transportation from the airport to our hospital.

Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! I am really flattered, my friends and I are just trying to make our own efforts to cherish life. Yet this young man has still not been discharged from hospital, he is preparing himself to be in an optimal state to take off. If he can overcome this difficulty, he will really appreciate everyone, and learn and experience a lot as well. It is you who give us hope and strength just a piece of driftwood in the vast sea!
Sincere admiration and gratitude.
Thank you!

(Dr. Lu is my secretary, the following are some emails after Liangliang was admitted to our hospital)
Dr. Lu,
Greetings! Not long ago I went to Taiwan to attend the graduation ceremony of my child and other unexpected factors, I am so sorry that I failed to learn Liangliang’s latest condition. I have read your email and was quite worried and sad, please help him to pull through the difficulty with all your efforts. Has the cryosurgery controlled his condition? I hope he can see the dawn. Thank you!
Sincerely yours,
Du Youqun,
June 22, 2011 11:58 p.m.
Dear Ms. Du,
I have always been very concerned about Liangliang’ condition, and have asked our medical personnel to make every effort to help him. He is a tough child. There are many metastases and the condition is complex and serious, so his treatment would be more difficult. This aside, we will do our best to help him.

Dear Ms. Du,
I hope you are well? I am quite happy to tell you Liangliang’s condition has improved. But he still needs social assistance for his following treatments. Now I am enclosing his recent photos and an article I wrote, I hope we can get help from you. Thank you,

Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! After reading your letters, different feelings well up in my heart. I feel inspired and moved, I feel a warm current course through my blood. To be frank, I thought Liangliang’s condition was not looking optimistic and my heart felt rock bottom. Some old friends persuaded me to face up to the reality and accept it, otherwise money may be spent to no avail. We are lucky that your professional and dedicated experts brought him and his mother hope and if not we couldn't bear it, it’s so great! I would also like to extend our utmost thanks to love and donations from you and all the medical staffs in Fuda. I have never seen such a good leader who not only leads his medical personnel to overcome the difficulties, but also helps the patient raise funds! I would like to take this opportunity to express my highest respect to the distinguished Professor Xu and all medical
personnel!

Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! Please carry on the treatment as you have planned. There is nothing more important than human life. All our friends and the people around us are helping to raise more funds.
With regard to the drugs, please advise whether is it more appropriate to select and purchase from your party? After all we are laymen, we do not know much about this area. Please advise if you need further cooperation. We will do our best.
Thank you!

Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! Liangliang and his mother's friends are making great efforts to help them. Four major Chinese newspapers in Malaysia, two of which China Press Daily and Guangming Daily have published this piece of fundraising news. Liangliang also raises medical expenses for himself via Facebook. I would like to ask you that is Madam Esther Law from Malaysia? Do I have an opportunity to visit her and seek help from her? I would appreciate it if you could advise.
Sincerely,
Du Youqun,
July 6th, 2011 3:13 p.m.
Dear Ms. Du,
Thank you. I have decided that our hospital will bear all the expenses of Liangliang’s special examinations, which will cost approximately RMB100, 000. Esther Law is Malaysian and the Director of the International Affairs Department of our hospital. It is her who donated 20,000 RMB the day before yesterday. But she is unwilling to make this public.
Thank you,

July 9th, 2011 10:09 a.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! I have received your letter, I am deeply grateful for your care and dedication! Liangliang has adapted to the drugs, and his condition has improved, which proved to be practical. Not only Liangliang, but also his family, friends and classmates are very excited. You are the frontline forces who fight against cancer and save lives, while we are the backup forces who raise money and cooperate with the hospital to free the frontline forces from those worries. We all do our best to help him! Thank you!

Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! I have sent several emails to my doctor friends to ask them to find Streptozotocin. So far I have not received any news yet. We are all concerned about Liangliang and his mother’s condition. It is said that Liangliang’s father is also required to do a body checkup, are you able to give a more detailed explanation for me to convey your message? Could you estimate how much all the treatments of Liangliang and his mother will cost? In any case everyone will work towards this goal. When will Liangliang return home from China? How long should he stay at Fuda?
Professor Xu, if you are too busy to reply to the above problems I mentioned, please ask other doctors to reply to my emails, otherwise I will feel terrible, sorry to trouble you! Thank you!
Sincerely yours,

July 12, 2011 3:54 p.m.
Dear Ms. Du,
Thank you. We are planning to do cryosurgery for his thoracic tumor and chemotherapy (with Streptozotocin-base). This drug can’t be found in China or European countries, but can only be found in the United States. Could you contact the American professors directly? I will contact the American professors in advance. Liangliang’s mother’s tumor is also malignant. It started in the pancreas and spread to the thoracic wall. The tumor is large, so first we intend to do vascular intervention therapy, thereafter we will consider whether it can be removed. She also needs chemotherapy. Both Liangliang and his mother are tragic, but what can we do? We are also distressed. What concerns us is whether our efforts could have satisfactory results? It seems our conscience versus reality always tests us. Now, it seems that we cannot retreat, we can only do whatever we can. Really, we should learn from you, Ms. Du.
Kecheng,
July 14th, 2011 10:07 a.m.
Dear Professor Xu,
Greetings! How is everything going? Madam Esther Law called me yesterday and told me how to buy Streptozotocin in the United States. If there is no misunderstanding, the drug will be purchased by your respected hospital and we will pay for it. But could you let us know how to deal with that? In order to rescue Liangliang and his mother, we are trying every means to raise money. According to Professor Xu, we may need to prepare another RM 100,000 which excludes Streptozotocin fees, which is certainly not a small figure! I would like to visit you, Professor Xu, Liangliang and his mother in Guangzhou, but I am afraid I will spend a lot of time raising funds so that I am not able to visit you at this moment. I fully believe that you have given all your dedication and effort. I hope that God will not let our efforts be in vain. Thank you!
Sincerely Yours,

God Bless. Liangliang’s condition had a miraculous improvement after two cryotherapy treatments. His blood glucose remained at a normal level and his blood insulin has been gradually going down. His mother’s condition also improved day by day. They were discharged from the hospital on the 28th of August(Figure 21). That day, I had just returned to Guangzhou from America, there was not enough time to say goodbye to them. I heard that when they returned to Kuala Lumpur, a reporter from the Guangming Daily and many Chinese friends welcomed them at the airport.
After further contact, we ultimately failed to buy Streptozotocin from the US. Later, experts from the MD Andersen Cancer Center said that even if we had bought the drug, it would not necessarily be effective but would incur significant side effects. After they knew that Liangliang had recovered, they were also very happy and even said, “we could not imagine that result.”
On November 13th 2011, I was invited to Kuala Lumpur to participate in a book signing activity for my book ‘Nothing But The Truth’. I called Liangliang, but unfortunately, he was traveling in Thailand, so I failed to meet him. But I met Ms. Du as she was also in the bookstore promoting her book. She was short and slender and wearing casual clothes. She was about 60 years old. After we met, we hugged each other. I cried almost nonstop. I asked her what was her relationship with Liangliang, she told me that they were just friends!
On November 30th 2012, I received an email from Ms. Du:
…Recently I went to visit Liangliang and his mother. Both of them were in good spirits. Without mobility problems, one would not guess he was seriously ill…Now Liangliang has devoted himself to the Youth League and lives a full life. Liangliang’s mother can walk on crutches and is able to do some light housework. I have concerns and worries about their condition, but I am greatly pleased to see them living a full life each day! Anyway, I would like to express my thanks to the medical team in Fuda! Despite patient health always changing, please do not give up. There are still many patients who need your treatments and care!
Sincerely yours,
Du Youqun
