In early 2012, Shenglin, a young Professor of Tsinghua University School of Medicine visited me and told me that Professor Dong Baowei would like to visit our hospital and know more of my ‘truths’. Although I had not met Professor Dong, I knew of his reputation as an interventional ultrasound expert and pioneer of microwave ablation therapy in China and Professor of the General Hospital of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and Tsinghua University School of Medicine. At the same time he serves an important role for the national health care. By the end of February, Professor Dong visited our hospital and modestly said, “I come here for the pursuit of your cancer concept, ideas and strategies”.
The Professor, whose high rank of Lieutenant-General modestly said, “If you say that I am a general, then I will be a defeated general”.
In the 1960s, he graduated from the most famous medical university in China – The Union Medical College. He worked in the surgical department of this school, taught by the most famous surgeon in China to excise tumors one after the other. But many patients cannot live long after surgery. An important provincial leader suffered from pancreatic cancer and the chief pancreatic surgery expert operated on him, but he only survived for three months. The trauma caused by the surgery made him miserable. More importantly, only a small portion of cancer patients can undergo surgery. He felt frustrated; in the early 1980s, he decided to abandon surgery, and threw himself into ultrasound diagnosis. He introduced microwave therapy and carried out ultrasound-guided microwave ablation to clear tumors that could not be removed by surgery. But he further found that many patients still died within a few months to a few years after ablation and he felt disappointed again. Eventually realizing cancer is a systemic disease, he entered the third stage, combining ablation therapy and overall treatment. He followed the theory that man is an integral part of nature. So he combined psychotherapy, lifestyle therapy, dietary therapy and systemic immunotherapy together. He gave a super-antigen to patients which were administered orally or by intramuscular or intralesional injections, some advanced cancer patients who had lost hope, miraculously survived(Figure 47).
He was pleased but not satisfied. So he made a special trip to meet me in Guangzhou. He believes that the ‘3C + P’ treatment mode in Fuda is what he wants, his ‘hot’ (microwave ablation) and our ‘cold’ (cryoablation) and combined immunotherapy including super-antigens have surprising effects on prolonging the survival time of cancer patients.
I was even more delighted as he used a similar antigen and believed in similar ‘truths’. Professor Dong is a superman. I fully admire his great wisdom.
