On 10th of February 2009, while in Vietnam, Professor Xu, president of Fuda Cancer Hospital-Guangzhou made a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister of Social Affairs, Mdm. Bui Thi Me. During the Vietnam War, while serving under the South Vietnamese Revolutionary Interim Government, Mdm. Bui Thi Me was injured and her health was compromised.
At the time of Prof. Xu's visit, Mdm. Bui Thi Me was 89 years old and had had four children. However, three of her children were killed during the Vietnamese War. She is now called “The Mother of Vietnamese Heroes” in recognition of her sacrifices she had made during the war.
At 8a.m. Professor Xu accompanied by Mdm. Lan Phuong to travel to a country cottage at the far end of a calm and peaceful alley in Ho Chi Minh City. When they arrived, they were greeted by Mdm. Bui Thi Me at the front door. She warmly shook hands with Professor Xu and expressed her appreciation to the Chinese government which had helped Vietnam tremendously during the Vietnamese War. Professor Xu presented a bouquet of flowers to Mdm. Bui Thi Me together with a digital album containing information on Fuda Cancer Hospital. Mdm. Bui Thi Me gave a brief account of herself during the war. She also showed Professor Xu photographs of her three children who were killed during the Vietnam War. Mdm. Bui Thi Me presented a biography of herself to Professor Xu as thanks and as a memento of his visit.
